SEEKING RESIDENTIAL CARE TAKER

Before you read any further, be aware that life at Rootstock is very dynamic. It’s fluid and unpredictable and there’s lots of energy that flows in and around this land and the people who come and go from here. Yes, it’s peaceful and grounded and yes, it’s also alive and changing. Learning to thrive in ambiguity, feeling into how to identify and communicate your needs with clarity and compassion, stepping up to tend and care for what needs caring for, learning how to set priorities inside a complex ecosystem, navigating how to be alone and together, and showing up authentically and with compassion in relationship…all of this is fundamental to work and service here.

Rootstock is seeking a Residential Grounds Keeper to come and support our operations, community, and land-based healing practice.

In its 6th year, Rootstock Retreat has grown into a thriving community center, respected medicine space, and elemental healing sanctuary. Unpretentious and unwavering in its integrity, the offerings made available by Beana and Rootstock are in service to building a new kind of world, deconditioning humanity, and empowering authentic and creative living in its guests. Safety is fundamental to the efficacy of the work that happens here and ensuring that the facilities, offerings, and operations are well tended is our priority.

Care Taking and tending demand both eagle vision and systems thinking. Care Taking relies on the generalists capacity to learn many things and the craft persons ability to master tasks. Although no one thing at Rootstock is particularly challenging to learn or master, the choreography, seasonality, and rustic nature of the space and its infrastructure demands patience to learn, attention to detail, resourcefulness, grit, physical capacity, tenderness, and maturity too tend with care. We are seeking a person or couple who wants to take care, who want to work hard, and who want to make beauty inside the temples at Rootstock.

Responsibilities of the Residential Care Taker include:

  • Garden & Grounds maintainence

  • Housekeeping & Building maintainence

  • Seasonal project work

  • Project Planning & Scheduling

  • Managing sub-contractors as needed (plumbers, electricians, pest control, etc)

  • Event Support as needed

This is a full time position that comes with room, board, and a salary. We are seeking an individual or couple willing to make a 1-2 year commitment, following an extensive interview process and 3 month trial period.

Folks seeking a ‘forever home’ that might be interested in co-stewarship and sustained live on the imagination farm are welcome but that will only come with time invested.

  • Work ethic and the desire to work full shifts while paying attention to detail

  • Communication skills and a willingness to give/receive feedback

  • Organizational skills, time management, and comfort with calendars

  • Physical endurance and the ability to lift heavy things sometimes

  • A deep love of snow! A deep love of fire! A deep love of Earth!

  • Connection to spirit in some way…you should be on your path and doing your work

  • Self-awareness and a desire to learn, grow, & evolve

  • Basic gardening/groundskeeping skills

  • Basic carpentry/handy-person skills & a resourcefulness to learn new things

  • Comfort in social situations and high emotional intelligence

  • A love of nature, weather, and the elements!

  • Capacity to work autonomously or in community, to manage and to be managed

  • Sense of humor and willingness to laugh

  • A love of cats and a willingness to live here without a dog. Rootstock is a dog-free campus.

Seriously, if you don’t love getting out of bed in the morning and diving into the day, this is not the place for you. If you don’t genuinely love doing good work and accomplishing tasks with both efficiency and style, this is not the place for you. Rootstock is a seeking a true professional to come and live a good life here making beauty and doing good work.

The schedule will change day-to-day, week to week, and season to season and this position will have tasks both assigned to them in addition to needing to self-direct their effort from time to time. Due to the nature of Rootstock, this position should enjoy time in conscious community and be willing to contribute positively to the healing work that happens here.

The right person(s) will be provided with:

  • An off-grid tiny house including a gas range, solar/usb lighting, woodstove, propane heater, fuel/wood, and 1 parking spot. Access to water is available at the cabin or bunkhouse.

  • A CSA to provide for healthy, local, organic eating.

  • Access to the Bathhouse for bathing/charging/lounging as needed.

  • Access to the Community Cabin

  • A monthly salary (dependent on skills/experience)

What’s not included:

  • Wifi is available in the Community Cabin but folks wanting access in their dwellings will need to purchase a hot spot independently.

  • Trash/recycling/laundry is not included and residents are responsible to manage their own as needed.

  • Guaranteed access to Rootstock programming

GUESTS & VISITORS

Friends and guests are most certainly welcome to visit you while you’re here though, folks wanting to stay for more than 7 consecutive days will be asked to 1) either Work-Trade or donate for their nights dwelling in your dwelling 2) supply their own sustenance 3) register ahead for any events, gatherings or ceremonies they plan to attend while on site and 4) donate $15-$45 for each day they access the Bathhouse with you.

We’ll be gathering applications in June, confirming interviews in July and are hopeful to onboard the right person in the late Summer, early Fall
